The Politician: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
The Politician

Critics Consensus

While The Politician can't uphold all of its tantalizing promises, it delivers just enough soapy satire in a sumptuous setting to keep Ryan Murphy fans invested -- though its unlikely to win him many new votes.

Highly watchable, as Payton's campaign repeatedly surmounts seemingly insurmountable problems, and, when bits of real feeling make it through all the acid humor, even touching.

The Murphy playbook here feels exhausting, counterproductively unrealistic, and even downright fearful.

It's a daring show that reveals right from the start how wooden and obviously constructed its central character is.

A grab bag of genres and tone, but Platt, as billed, is special indeed.

Ben Platt's dazzlingly faceted Payton is a person we can root for, however unwillingly.

Sep 27, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

It's not a particularly good series, but there are a lot of great ideas and a few good characters swirling around in what is otherwise a muddled, try-hard mess.

His lust for power is accompanied by lies, venality and whatever else it takes, and it's all very artfully framed and shot, but I couldn't care less about any of these people.

Violence, murder, dark dealings in high school-set drama.

Think of it as Glee meets House of Cards... But you might end up wanting less high school melodrama and more political machinations.

There are moments when the talented Ben Platt gives added complexity to a character that seemed to only embody big statements. [Full Review in Spanish]

There are moments in the first episode where you can sense what the show might be aiming for... And when Gwyneth Paltrow gets involved as Payton's emotionally distant adoptive mother, it briefly delivers. Too bad about the other 50 minutes.

The first half was good, but the characters didn't seem human at all. Jessica Lange's scenes were the only good thing at some point. The whole main crew were more irritating than it's necessary. Not sure if there is a character we should empathize with.

great show, great cast. loved the season and hoping for a new one.

Delivers incredibly on what it promises: darkly humorous political satire, with wit and tonal shifts reminiscent of Wes Anderson.

    Somewhat boring. Not for everyone.

This show is EVERYTHING. The cinematography, the cast, the slight satire, and the over-arching themes. I can see how it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but MAN I loved it. I feel like people who aren't able to look for deeper meaning might not like it so much, but I thought it was very well done.
