Even with all the overt manipulations, this Netflix drama feels good-intentioned.

All of the black excellence in 'Raising Dion' exists alongside the bigotry as it does in real life, reminding us that we cannot escape the hate. However, we can still attain Black excellence in the face of it and in spite of it.

This familiar-feeling tale not only comes from a fresh perspective, the series dodges genre tropes and expectations to deliver a fun supernatural story with edge and purpose.

Supervillain violence, bullying, in excellent family drama.

Bound to resonate with audiences. That is, if they can get over the bad CGI, poor pacing, and shaky child acting.

Raising Dion works mainly because of the performances and chemistry between Young and Wainright, with a little help from Ritter.

In essence, the series feels like two different shows that are being forced to go hand in hand, and it all feels a little jarring.

Oct 3, 2019 | Rating: 2.5/5.0 | Full Review…

Raising Dion makes for an exciting children's show about tapping into your power in order to make the world a better place. With more focus and a little more nerve, the show could make incredible leaps and bounds.

There might not be much, narratively, that is new to adult viewers - but is there ever? Still, it is a fresh twist.

Nobody acts like an actual person. They act like they are in a sitcom or a weak drama, though in the early going Simon and Ritter, as Kat and Pat, at least come off as vaguely normal and believable.

Raising Dion isn't perfect, but the season breezed by for me. And it's a show made by people with obvious affection for comics.

Oct 2, 2019 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

Splicing family drama with comic-book action produces some engaging story beats, but the friction between the two genres eventually makes the show fall apart.

Audience Reviews for Raising Dion: Season 1

Even though this got mixed reviews--at least, from what I saw--I thought I'd check it out. Hands down, this is one of the worst shows I've ever seen. And I love sci-fi! It's annoying vs. scary, the script is just a mess and the characters annoying. I actually LOVED the original trailer. I don't know why the producers/director decided to go with a new cast but I don't think it's really the cast's fault. The material is just so awful, you can't get blood from a stone.

A gorgeous tale of one mom's journey to discover how her son ended up with superpowers. It's an honest look at the world through the guise of fantasy. The show is off to a great start and I cannot wait for season two.

There are many things to love about this show. Child superhero that isn't all Disneyfied, Showcasing the struggles of single mothers and the bigotry that still exist for people of color, the promotion of science and arts, and Esperanza. It also has some elements that are kinda cliche in modern Netflix shows and tends to promote the narrative of white males are naturally evil. At least in Black lighting, bad guys didn't have a color code bad was bad no matter the color. If you can get past this divisive troupe it is a rather enjoyable and fun show to watch for the whole family

Great show that we are enjoying watching as a family. Appreciate Netflix making a film that a family can enjoy together. Most movies for an adult audience have R ratings. Kids animated movies are not interesting for older kids. With this movie, Netflix provides a nice bridge that's interesting for everyone and can be enjoyed together as a family. It has sci fi suspense, interesting characters, good acting, and a nice plot line to keep the viewer engaged. Also appreciate the central characters being people of color which is not common in main stream movies.

I like science fiction and super hero shows. This one checked all the boxes for me and kept my attention while I binge watched the entire first season on one weekend. It is well work your time.

I loved this show. Not even mentioning the awesome kids and diversity of the show... it's just simply great watching. Please Netflix renew for a second season.

Something fresh and thank god the child doesn't act like a messiah. Might I say I liked it better than Stranger Things 2nd and 3rd Season.

I like it, the first episode can be a bit boring, but the second episode becomes more exciting, and past that is more like discovering and exploring. The kid (young) does a great job... very nice to finally watch hero related series without the gore and sex for once.
